Was the founding director of the Istituto di Storia delle Alpi at the Università della Svizzera italiana, 2000-2005, and co-editor of the multilingual journal „Histoire des Alpes Storia delle Alpi Geschichte der Alpen“, 19962005.

Is currently professor of history at the

, and involved in the research project „Comparative Mountain History in the Modern Period“ (20072010).

Held/holds several positions in academic institutions, including: International Society for Alpine History (founding member and secretary general), Interacademic Commission for Alpine Studies ICAS (founding member), Swiss National Science Foundation (Stiftungsrat), International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (member of Swiss commitee).
