1940 Born on March 11 in Berlin. Primary school and college in Frankenberg

1951 First photographs with a box camera

1958-1961 Apprenticeship as a photographer

1961 Winner of the photography contest Du und Deine Welt (You and your world).

First ascents in the Western Alps

1962 Four months climbing in the Western and Eastern Alps
- MJC St. Gervais, Genève
- Eurozentrum, Köln, (D)

1963 First cover photo (Der Bergkamerad)

1964 Free lance photographer. Beginning of a long collaboration with author and publisher Walter Pause

1970 Member of the Nanga Parbat expedition guided by Karl Maria Herrligkofer. Further members were Reinhold and Günter Messner

In the same year publication of the book Im extremen Fels by Pause/Winkler, the «bible» of extreme climbing in the seventies

1971 Extensive work as a guide of trekking tours and expeditions world-wide

1972 First exhibition in Munich

1973 Licensed as mountain and ski guide

1976 Book Nepal appears. Publications in Merian and Geo. Further exhibitions

1989 Book Himalaya published by Bruckmann. European Mountain Book Award

1990 Award by the German Alpine Association for his merits in developing mountain photography

1993 Book Aus den Bergen: Photographien in Schwarzweiss appears. Received the Prix Mondial de l'Image de Montagne

1998 Full member of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie

2000 Book Das andere Bild der Berge

Brenta alta Oggioni route, Rotwand Buhl route, Sattelspitze North-East Face (second ascent), Königspitze North Face, Cassin route on Piz Badile, Bonatti route on Grand Capucin, Petites Jorasses West Face, Grandes Jorasses Walker Pillar, North Faces of Aiguille de Triolet, Les Courtes, Aiguille du Plan, Aiguille d'Argentière, Aiguille de Chardonnet, Mont Blanc Innominata Ridge and the entire Peuterey Ridge (5th as-cent).
